Week 4 Day 2: Action

Question: Consider your routines – where is God?

  1. One lesson that chaplaincy is really bringing out for me is the sacredness of all things, and how we can find God in even the most mundane tasks if we can attune our spiritual senses better. People in the hospital are often very limited in what they are able to do, so even very simple thing can become moments to experience grace -- like just being able to take a walk down the hall. This makes me want to be able to notice where God is within all of my daily work, routines, and experiences as well.
Also, I really loved what was said in today's video about going through the motions, and how this helps us to be able to experience and believe that God is with us in everything. The old saying in the church is "lex orandi, lex credendi" which essentially means that how you pray is how you believe. We live our way into faith -- the action part comes before the mental part in many ways.

    1. Brian, I always appreciate reading your postings. In my role as a professor, I sometimes feel less than motivated when it comes to certain tasks, like grading. I teach many of the same courses, so I am very familiar with the assignments. I could just go through the motions, but it is important to provide students with personalized feedback. Some days, I just sit down and tell myself I have to get through it. Once I start, I find myself drawn back into the connections with each student as more than just a name on the screen. When I read emails and comments on course evaluations, I am reminded that my work is important and makes a difference, even if I never know the full impact. I am sure that is the case for you as a Chaplain, as well.
